New Digi Software Solutions for DAL OS 23.3 Firmware and Digi Remote Manager

As part of our ongoing commitment to provide regularly scheduled firmware updates for our networking solutions, we are pleased to announce the latest firmware enhancements in DAL OS 23.3 and Digi Remote Manager. Software updates are vital to optimize performance, enhance user experience and ensure a high-level of security.

These updates enable us to deploy security patches and bug fixes in a timely fashion, and enable new features in order to continually enhance the value and capabilities of your Digi cellular routers, servers, and infrastructure management systems.

The Digi Accelerated Linux operating system (DAL OS) provides powerful intelligence to our solutions, enabling automation, security, out-of-band management and other sophisticated capabilities that support the needs of users and network managers across enterprise, industrial, transportation, government and medical use cases.

DAL OS is fully integrated with Digi Remote Manager®, our cloud-based remote configuration and management tool, and together these key software offerings enable those who use and manage Digi solutions to gain visibility and seamless access to the full value of their devices — wherever they are deployed.

Digi is excited to announce that we have added several great new features to Digi Remote Manager and  DAL OS version 23.3.31.129.  We invite you to take a minute and walk through the most important highlights of our software’s latest additions and changes below.

Which Digi Devices Support DAL OS?

Digi has a large and growing list of devices based on the DAL operating system — including routers, console servers, USB management devices and other infrastructure management products:

Digi Pillars of Focus

The following software features revolve around the four pillars of Digi: security, ease of use, resiliency, and cost savings.

Security

Mission and business-critical devices often live in the field for many years. With each major release of Digi’s DAL OS, we address common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVEs) including ongoing monitoring, alerts, and notifications related to CVEs.

Updates for critical CVE patches:

  • Linux kernel version 6.1
  • OpenSSL 1.1.1t and 3.0.8 (CVE-2023-0401, CVE-2023-0286, CVE-2023-0217, CVE-2023-0216, CVE-2023-0215, CVE-2022-4450, CVE-2022-4450, CVE-2022-4304, CVE-2022-4203, CVE-2022-3996, CVE-2023-0286, CVE-2023-0215, CVE-2022-4450, CVE-2022-4304)
  • netifd version 18.06
  • libexpat version 2.5.0 (CVE-2022-23852, CVE-2022-23990, CVE-2022-22827, CVE-2022-22826, CVE-2022-22825, CVE-2022-22824, CVE-2022-22823, CVE-2022-22822)

Redesigned Surelink configuration settings

Digi Surelink® configuration settings are now listed in a single section under each network interface, as opposed to a separate section for IPv4 vs IPv6.  The layout of the connectivity tests and recovery actions to perform have been redesigned to provide a more streamlined setup.

Any configured tests and recovery actions are performed in the order they are configured, along with a new capability for integrating custom scripts as a test or recovery action.

This makes Surelink tests incredibly straightforward to configure, monitor, and customize to conform exactly to the needs of your network setup and ensure the Digi device is fully validating its network access along with taking appropriate actions to automatically recover in the event that problems are detected.

See the Surelink section of the Digi device’s user guide for additional details.

Additional customization and monitoring of WAN Bonding connections

Digi WAN Bonding now has the capability to utilize multiple different modes to fully leverage various WAN bonding use cases, including:

  • WAN aggregation — Combines multiple WAN links for increased speed and bandwidth for one or multiple devices, up to a maximum bandwidth of 1 Gbps
  • Packet duplication — Ensures delivery of mission-critical data by replicating packets on multiple WAN links

Each network interface included in the WAN bonded tunnel also has a separate mode that can be configured to optimize the connection for performance, latency, or cellular-related connections. There is also a new TCP mode to bypass performance issues on networks that do not prioritize UDP packets. See the WAN Bonding section in the user guide for more details.

Resiliency

Resilience iconDMVPN spoke with NHRP and mGRE support

Dynamic routing helps keep your network packet handling up to date, and ensure your data gets to where it needs to go.  Dynamic Multipoint Virtual Private Network (DMVPN) is a dynamic tunneling form of a virtual private network (VPN), using a multi spoke-to-hub network in which the network addresses of the spoke routers do not need to be known, and therefore do not need to be configured in the hub router.  Digi devices can now be configured as a DMVPN spoke along with NHRP or mGRE routing, with compatibility to connect to a myriad of DMVPN hubs, including Cisco DMVPN hubs.

See the DMVPN section of the Digi device’s user guide for additional details.

Keep your systems in sync with the Digi device’s cellular modem as a time source

Many customers have Digi devices installed in private cellular networks that are air-gapped from the public Internet. These devices still need to sync their local system clocks with an external source so it can maintain timely communication with other equipment on the network. Digi devices now have a tertiary option to utilize its internal cellular modem as a time source in addition to utilizing external NTP servers or a built-in GNSS module if available.

Expand your ITxPT network options with IPv6 support

ITxPT is an industry standard implementation of information technology for public transportation systems. ITxPT has available on Digi’s TX product series, since late 2022, but was limited to IPv4-only environments.  With the new 23.3 firmware release, Digi expands its ITxPT capabilities to support both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.  Details on ITxPT setup and configuration can be found in our ITxPT support documentation.

Keep your Digi Containers running with auto-start options

We’re expanding the capabilities for our Digi Containers service with several new features:

  1. Containers can be automatically started when the device boots up.
  2. Containers can be automatically restarted if it stops for any reason.
  3. Configurable shared directories between the Digi device’s host filesystem and the Container’s filesystem.
