Security and integrity of wireless communication have always been at the forefront in Digi XBee® design. Today, integrating security into every level of product design is critical for an end-to-end proactive approach to the prevention of cyberattacks. And this means developers must have the best tools available to integrate cybersecurity into their embedded design.

Digi recently released Digi XBee Secure Sessions functionality for Digi XBee 3 RF modules to assist IoT developers in integrating another layer of security.

The Secure Sessions functionality is a password-secured connection between two nodes in a Digi XBee network (server and client) where the pair can send and receive encrypted data that only they can decrypt. This functionality further strengthens Digi XBee’s security with another layer of protection against man-in-the-middle attacks.

Enabling Digi XBee Secure Sessions

To enable the Secure Session functionality, you must use Digi XCTU® (Digi XBee Configuration and Test Utility), a free tool from Digi. XCTU includes support to configure the password of the Digi XBee device you have established as the server through a new Secure Session authentication dialog accessible from the configuration settings of the Digi XBee device.

Also, Digi XCTU automatically detects when a secure session needs to be established with a remote Digi XBee device in order to configure or communicate with it. When this happens, XCTU displays a dialog to enter the password of the remote Digi XBee device (server) for authentication.

Digi XBee Secure Sessions functionality is available for the following Digi XBee 3 firmware:

  • Digi XBee 3 Zigbee Version 3004
  • Digi XBee 3 DigiMesh Version 3004
  • Digi XBee 3 802.15.4 Version 2006
